The Sage’s Answers, Part 14

We continue with our answers. Five today featuring Witcher Life Paths and Combat Questions.

Just to remind everyone, here we’ll be answering questions players and GMs have asked about The Witcher TRPG with the goal of turning them into an errata and updating the book down the line.

Cody Pondsmith, our line developer, will be answering five to ten questions each time we post. We’re going to shoot for either every weekday or every other weekday, schedules allowing, and when there’s going to be longer breaks, we’ll try our best to let you know in advance. We’ll be posting each The Sage’s Answers on our blog, our Facebook, and on the r/WitcherTRPG subreddit. On our blog, I’ll be tagging each entry with “sagesanswers” to make them easy to find.

Dimiurko asks…

When I may perform extra attack? For example, can I make a special attack and then make extra attack? Can I cast spell/sign and make extra attack?

Cody answers…

Hey, Dimiurko! An extra attack is made at the end of your turn, after you have executed your movement and primary action (or primary action and movement, if you desire). You could perform a special attack (such as a trip attack) as your primary action and then make an extra attack, make a normal attack (two Fast Strikes or a Strong Strike) and make an extra attack, or cast a spell/sign and make an extra attack.

Soleil01001 asks…

What is the minimum distance we have to be to engage in melee combat?

Cody answers…

Hey, Soleil01001! The minimum distance to be engaged in melee combat is 2m and that only applies if you have a Long Reach weapon. Otherwise you must be within 1m of your opponent. If you are using a grid map, you must be adjacent to the target (or have no more than 1 square/hex between you and the target if you have a Long Reach weapon).

Soleil01001 asks…

Can we break move and attack actions? Can a character move to a target without going a number of meters equal to their SPD, use fast strikes and kill it in the first attack, move a bit more and use the second attack on another target?

Cody answers…

As written, you cannot split movement in the way you describe (move, Fast Attack part 1, move, Fast Attack part 2). You have to either take your Attack action and then move or move and then your take Attack action.

Leandro B asks…

In pg 25 says that Witchers has their own Lifepath rules. But it also says that can row or choose the normal Lifepath to know about your family. The question is: do you gain the bonus listed too? It’s not clear.

Cody answers…

Hey, Leandro! We’ll have to make a note. Choosing/rolling your homeland and learning about the family you never knew is really more of a flavor addition for Witchers. You don’t get any of the bonuses for those Lifepath choices/rolls.

Leandro B asks…

Still about Lifepath. Witcher has their own Lifebath, I get it. But what about Your Life Events? I know that Witchers has something similar, but it’s not clear if the player can roll the tables from pg 31 to 36..

Cody answers…

When you are playing a witcher you roll on the “Life as A Witcher” beginning on page 241 tables instead of the Life Events table. This represents that fact that Witchers live different lives than other characters.

That’s it!

Keep your swords sharp!
